Charlie's Background Information

Charlie is often asked why he chose to become a massage therapist, especially before it became as popular as it is today? He recalls,"I played football in college and it would take several days to feel normal from the pounding of a game. One week, I had a massage after a game and the effects of that massage were amazing - in how much of my pain and stiffness diminished." After that experince, Charlie decided to commit himself to learning as much as he could about the marvelous healing effects of touch therapies!

Charlie has been actively involved in the Holistic Health field since his college days in 1975. While finishing his Masters Degree Program in Clinical Social Work from Rutgers University, he began his study of Massage Therapy with a local Physical Therapist. At that time he also pursued Bioenergetic Analysis and studied at Esalen Institiute in Big Sur, California.

Throughout his career, Charlie has studied many different styles of work and techniques. He has been an avid receiver of regular massage therapy wherein he has learned from other gifted therapists all over the country. He can provide deep tissue work or relaxing style massages depending on a client's preference. Charlie also is a Certified Trager and Watsu Practitoner which are fabulous modalities with tremendous healing potential.

Charlie has been a prominent local and national leader in his field through the American Massage Therapy Association. He presently serves as the National AMTA Grievance Commission Chair for its 50,000 members.

In relation to massage, Charlie has aided many active and retired athletes through therapy with advanced stretching techniques.  He is popularly known for his sessions focused on Active Isolated Stretching (AIS).  Aaron Mattes' AIS technique is an effective treatment for deep and superficial fascial release - restoring proper fascial planes for optimal physiologic function.  Aaron is a personal friend and mentor of Charlie. Charlie has trained with Aaron for nearly 15 years and has made several trips to work in Aaron's clinic in Sarasota, Florida.

Over the past 10 yeas, Charlie has become increasingly interested in aromatherapy and now involves his extensive knowledge in most of his therapy sessions. His main teacher in this field has been Debbie Freund form Neshanic Station, NJ who is a close friend. He has learned a great deal about essential oils from Debbie and under Debbie's direction has been to India for more extensive studies of essential oil distilleries and producers. He uses the oils in his blends for massage and healing, has created his own signature Salt Scrub and continues to learn as much as he can about this wonderful healing art.

Charlie is a NJ Licensed Clinical Social Worker and has been an active employee of the Elizabeth, NJ Public School System for the past 20 years. He also offers private holistic orientated counseling services. Charlie is a NJ State Certified Massage, Bodywork & Somatic Therapist. He is an adjunct professor at Drew University, where he currently offers a course based on the Mind, Body and Spirit relationship. Charlie was formerly the professor of Massage Therapy at Essex County College.

Charlie is happily married to his life long partner, Karen. They have 3 beautiful children, Jacey, Douglas and Haley and are blessed with 2 amazing grandchildren, Sabrina and Julian.
